Benjamin Talbot began with the name Dead Men Float in 2022 and built the drink around a shot pairing of Fernet-Branca and Mr Black that the creator calls a Mr Branca™. The usual 50:50 split is tilted slightly toward Fernet, which lifts the aroma and helps the drink cut through at the finish.

- Combine all ingredients except for the Fernet Branca and coffee liqueur in a shaker with some ice cubes.
- Shake vigorously.
- Strain this mixture over crushed ice in a highball glass.
- Carefully float the Fernet Branca and coffee liqueur on top of the drink.
- Garnish with pineapple fronds.
