Old Number One

Stir Apple Brandy, Scotch, Sweet Vermouth, Angostura Bitters with ice. Strain into a coupe.

While working on an apple-themed cocktail article for the Fall 2022 issue of Edible Boston and Edible Worcester, I developed a recipe inspired by the Marconi Wireless, a drink that holds such fondness in my heart that I named one of my cats after it. The original Marconi Wireless is reminiscent of an apple Manhattan. For this new creation, I incorporated Scotch and replaced the orange bitters with Angostura to craft what became known as the Old Number One. This cocktail pays homage to Charles William Jr.'s house on Arlington Street in Somerville, MA, where the world's first telephone was installed. The location is just a short distance from my home, making it an integral part of our city’s history alongside Marshmallow Fluff.
