Tracie Herrmann of The Stissing House in Pine Plains, New York, created the drink in 2019 after a customer dared Herrmann to combine Maker's Mark with Fernet Branca. Because a cocktail called Challenge Accepted already exists, Herrmann chose the name Challenge Excepted.
