Frederic Yarm created the Runaway Horses in Boston in 2020, starting from a recipe in a 1934 Laird's book and trying apple brandy with bitters combinations borrowed from other cocktails. Elements of an Apple Negroni shaped the final equal-parts drink, which is named after Yukio Mishima's novel "Runaway Horses".
