- Combine fresh red bell pepper, a thin jalapeño slice, and a pinch of salt in a cocktail shaker with the shrub.
- Next, add rye whiskey and mezcal to the mixture along with 5-6 whole sage leaves; gently press these leaves within the shaker.
- Pack this shaker with ice cubes and agitate vigorously for about 20 seconds.
- After shaking, strain the contents directly into a small serving glass without any ice.
- Tap one large sage leaf to release its fragrance, then rim the glass using it but discard afterward.
- For garnish, place a slice of red bell pepper on top of the drink with an attached dried sage leaf extending over the edge.
- Light the end of the sage leaf and allow it to smoke gently while serving; ensure no ashes fall into the cocktail.
