Instructions

  1. Combine fresh red bell pepper, a thin jalapeño slice, and a pinch of salt in a cocktail shaker with the shrub.
  2. Next, add rye whiskey and mezcal to the mixture along with 5-6 whole sage leaves; gently press these leaves within the shaker.
  3. Pack this shaker with ice cubes and agitate vigorously for about 20 seconds.
  4. After shaking, strain the contents directly into a small serving glass without any ice.
  5. Tap one large sage leaf to release its fragrance, then rim the glass using it but discard afterward.
  6. For garnish, place a slice of red bell pepper on top of the drink with an attached dried sage leaf extending over the edge.
  7. Light the end of the sage leaf and allow it to smoke gently while serving; ensure no ashes fall into the cocktail.
