Shawn C. created the Progressive Orangutan in Fresno, California, in 2023 as a variation on the Liberal. It uses Bigallet China-China Amer in place of Amer Picon, and Carpano Dry Vermouth in place of sweet vermouth. The name pairs "Progressive", a nod to Teddy Roosevelt's Progressive Party and the Liberal's roots, with "Orangutan", a play on the orange flavor the drink puts first.
