Progressive Orangutan

Stir Rye Whiskey, Dry Vermouth, Bigallet China-China, Orange Bitters with ice. Strain into a cocktail glass.

I love experimenting with variations on the Liberal cocktail by swapping out Bigallet China-China Amer for the traditional Amer Picon. Recently, I decided to try Carpano Dry Vermouth instead of sweet vermouth, which has become my go-to dry option lately. It adds a robust flavor that complements the orange notes from the Amer and bitters. While brainstorming names, I considered references to Teddy Roosevelt's Progressive Party as an homage to the Liberal cocktail’s roots. Since my focus was on making orange the standout ingredient without using a generic name, "Orangutan" struck me as a playful nod to the citrus theme. Combining that with “progressive” felt like the perfect fit.
