Ian Lacy created the Patwa Mokulele at home in Kansas City in 2020, taking the Paper Plane as inspiration. Its name combines Patwa, the Jamaican Creole whose name sounds like "paper", with the Hawaiian mokulele, meaning "plane" or "island hopper".
