Frederic Yarm created the New Nails at Drink in Boston in 2022, after a Rusty Nail order at the bar set the idea in motion. Drambuie and the Scotch and Jamaican rum pairing from the Modernista were merged with the Rusty Nail, with citrus left out and Angostura bitters added for complexity. The name is borrowed from Mission of Burma's 1982 song "New Nails".
