Martini
0
A dry, gin-forward Martini: five parts gin to one part dry vermouth, with a dash of orange bitters and a lemon twist, stirred and served in a cocktail glass. Crisp and clean, with citrus oils from the twist on top.
The original Martini was made with sweet vermouth, and the word "dry" later indicated that dry vermouth was used instead. The drink is possibly credited to the Knickerbocker Hotel in New York, around 1911. Franklin D. Roosevelt mixed his own martinis for guests in the White House, usually three or four parts gin to one of dry vermouth. Winston Churchill's famous habit of only glancing at the vermouth bottle is, as far as anyone can show, a legend. Read about the White House drinks
