Stir Bourbon, Simple Syrup, Maraschino Liqueur, Angostura Bitters with ice. Strain into a cocktail glass.

Jerry Thomas invented the Improved Whiskey Cocktail, which gained more attention through David Wondrich’s columns in Esquire and his book Imbibe!. Although it's already a delightful drink, I believe it can be enhanced by cutting back on or eliminating the simple syrup. The current sweetness level is fine but could benefit from being slightly less sweet.

Instructions

  1. Fill a mixing glass with ice.
  2. Combine all liquids and stir well to chill.
  3. Pour the mixture through a strainer into a frozen cocktail glass.
  4. Garnish by slicing a bit of lemon peel and dropping it inside the drink.
