Frederic Yarm took the Sfumato-and-cinnamon syrup of the Armstrong cocktail from Idlewild as a starting point and found that it worked well alongside Scotch and apple brandy. The Montenegro-and-cinnamon combination in the Battle Annie suggested a gang-themed name, and Herbert Asbury's The Barbary Coast supplied Haggerty, a member of the Sydney Ducks, a gang of British criminals who moved to San Francisco during the Gold Rush, and the owner of the Goat & Compass and the Golden Rule bars.
