Frederic Yarm created Handsome Bob in 2019 as a nod to 19th-century Saratoga, New York, and the "Dude Off", a rivalry between Evander Berry Wall and Robert "Handsome Bob" Hillard. Wall won and became known as the "King of the Dudes". The drink takes its cue from Jerry Thomas's Saratoga cocktail of 1862, alongside Harry Johnson's Brandy Old Fashioned of 1882, which is sweetened with pineapple syrup and maraschino.
