The tale of Saratoga, NY, in the cocktail world of the 19th century includes a legendary rivalry between Evander Berry Wall and Robert "Handsome Bob" Hillard known as the "Dude Off." Although Hillard lost and Wall earned the title of "King of the Dudes," I wanted to honor this era with a lesser-known drink. Jerry Thomas' 1862 Saratoga cocktail, which predates the Vieux Carre but lacks Benedictine and Peychaud's bitters, inspired me. However, Harry Johnson’s Brandy Old Fashioned from 1882, featuring pineapple syrup and Maraschino as sweeteners, stands out more today.
