Peel and thinly slice the ginger.
In a shaker, combine the sliced ginger and sugar, muddle until the sugar dissolves. Mix in lemon juice and whisky. Shake vigorously with ice cubes or crushed ice. Pour over Ginger Ale to top up.
Alternatively, place the ginger slices and sugar at the bottom of a highball glass, muddle until dissolved. Add lemon juice and whisky, stir gently. Fill with ice cubes or crushed ice, then top off with Ginger Ale.
Garnish with a cocktail pick and a sprig of mint or another green leaf.
