Georgetown Tuxedo

Stir White Rum, Dry Vermouth, Velvet Falernum, Maraschino Liqueur with ice. Strain into a cocktail glass.

One day, a customer asked for a Martinez, and I mentioned that while it’s one of my favorite Martini variations, I also adore the Tuxedo No. 2. As she grew more confident in me, she tried it and declared it her new go-to gin drink. Later, pondering how to enhance the Tuxedo No. 2 with its Maraschino and absinthe additions while keeping the dry vermouth, I recalled Charles H. Baker Jr.’s Georgetown Club from his South American Gentleman’s Companion, a rum-based cocktail that I loved so much I added it to Loyal Nine's menu. Inspired by The Savoy Cocktail Book’s “Improved treatment” of the Tuxedo No. 2, I blended these elements and called my creation the Georgetown Tuxedo. From previous experience with falernum and Maraschino in the Crafty & Elusive Elk, I knew they paired well. Initially using a fine white rum for this cocktail, I thought adding a hint of rhum agricole or Jamaican white rum might elevate it further; at Loyal Nine, I served the Georgetown Club with a quarter ounce of rhum agricole.
