The Gadsden Purchase was a 29,670-square-mile area of what is now southern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico, bought by the United States under a treaty signed on December 30, 1853. The deal was negotiated by James Gadsden, then U.S. ambassador to Mexico, and a chef from the region suggested the name for the drink.
