Frederic Yarm created the Devil's Staircase in 2023 in Somerville, Massachusetts, drawing on the Crooklyn from Franklin Mortgage & Investment Co. and Black & Bluegrass from Cure. It follows a Black Manhattan with Averna and curaçao in a 3:1 ratio plus Angostura and Peychaud's bitters, but uses equal parts apple brandy and mezcal. The name comes from an IPA by Widowmaker Brewing.
