Devil's Own Mistress

Stir Overproof Rum, Sweet Vermouth, BéNéDictine, Fernet Branca with ice. Strain into a rocks glass.

One evening, while rummaging through my phone notes, I stumbled upon an idea for a riff on the Away Colors cocktail. My initial mix included rum, Fernet, banana liqueur, Benedictine, and Punt e Mes, with Planter's OFTD boosting the rum flavor. However, this didn't quite hit the mark as intended. Adjusting to sweet vermouth instead of the aromatized wine and adding a touch of absinthe improved the balance significantly. Browsing through my list of drink names for inspiration, I came across "Devil's Own Mistress" in Stephanie Schorow’s book The Combat Zone. This moniker originally referred to performer Amy Walker.
