Irish whiskey stirred with dry vermouth and Bénédictine, finished with orange peel. Dry and herbal, with a smooth sweetness. First described by Hugo R. Ensslin in 1917.

The Brainstorm first appeared as "Brain Storm" in Hugo Ensslin's 1917 book "Recipes for Mixed Drinks", and the 1930 Savoy Cocktail Book printed it as "Brainstorm", the spelling now most common. Early recipes measured the Bénédictine and the vermouth in dashes, while modern versions use half an ounce of each, since dash sizes of that era are unclear.
