Black Hand Society

Shake Fernet Branca, Campari, Pineapple Juice, Lime Juice with ice. Strain into a coupe.

Inspired by the Ai Ono cocktail from the night before, I combined elements of the Gilda and Ferrari (a Fernet-Campari shot or drink) to create a new twist. Named after the Black Hand Society, a notorious crime syndicate that operated in New Orleans around 1900 as detailed in Herbert Asbury's "The French Quarter," this group was infamous for blackmail and sending threatening messages adorned with black hands and crimson skulls. The Fernet and Campari, paired with pineapple, lime, and cinnamon, perfectly captured the dark imagery of the Black Hand Society. This reminded me of the Trash Polka cocktail, which I named after a German tattoo style using either black or red ink. Given that Fernet, pineapple, cinnamon, and lime had already proven successful in my gin-based Awkwardly Tongue Tied, I felt confident this new concoction would be a hit.
