Aztec Death Whistle

Stir Mezcal, Ancho Reyes Chile Liqueur, Orange Liqueur, Fernet Branca with ice. Strain into a rocks glass.

At Gato Exotico, we had an Aztec death whistle-shaped Tiki mug that was too small for Margaritas, so I decided to create a cocktail to match its aggressive vibe. Inspired by the Don't Give Up the Ship, I swapped gin and Dubonnet with mezcal and chile liqueur. The Ancho Reyes and Fernet combination worked well in My Name is Nobody, while Third Times' the Charm used Ancho Reyes and orange liqueur successfully. We named our drink after an Aztec whistle that made a high-pitched shriek, possibly used to scare enemies or for ceremonies. Our team experimented with different Ferntes like Branca, Amargo Vallet, and Fernet Vallet, settling on Mexican Fernet as the favorite. My manager suggested adding orange instead of lemon for a citrus twist. Since Espolon is associated with the mug, we plan to use an equal split of Espolon Tequila and mezcal. A shorter straw might be necessary due to the higher proof nature of the drink.
