8th Arrondissement

Shake Cognac, Grenadine, Amer Picon, Lemon Juice with ice. Strain into a coupe.
After attending Thirst Boston, I reflected on discussions about the Ward 8 cocktail and Robert Vermeire's 1922 recipe for it. The original used orange juice with American whiskey, but I found this combination unappealing due to clashing flavors. Wondering what spirits might work better, my gaze landed on Cognac at home. Inspired by French elements, I considered swapping the orange juice with Amer Picon, a choice that reminded me of Trader Vic's recipes and Paul McGee’s curaçao substitution for orange juice. Naming it after Paris's 8th Arrondissement, which includes the Champs-Élysées, seemed fitting.
